Geographic Features
Tai'an is located at the foot of south Mount Tai with the Yellow River to the west. It lies at between 116o 20' and 117o 59' east longitude and between 35o 38' and 36o 28' north latitude, Tai'an has a total area of 7,762 square kilometers. Tai'an enjoys the temperate continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The city receives an average annual rainfall of 700-800 millimeters and the average annual temperature of 12.9 Co .
People
Tai'an has a population of 5.46 million, among which 98.71 percent are of the Han nationality, while 1.02 per cent is of the Hui ethnic groups. The main religion here is Buddhism and Taoism. The natives speak local dialect, but the government language is still mandarin.
History
As early as 5000 years ago, people lived and worked in the area. In the Zhou Dynasty (1066-221BC), Tai'an was under administration of Qi and Lu kingdoms. In 200 BC, the Qi County was set up here. In the 6th century AD, the named was changed to Dongping County. In 1182, Tai'an was established as a prefecture. Since the founder of Qin Dynasty did the sacrificial rite at Mount Tai in 3rd century BC, the Mount Tai was frequently visited by the following emperors. Tai'an served as the gateway and stopover to the Mount Tai.
